About Colombia

Mission statement of the university

Columbia University is one of the world's most important research centers and at the same time a distinctive and excellent learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students in many academic and professional fields. The university recognizes the importance of its location in New York City and tries to combine its research and teaching with the enormous resources of a large metropolis. It is intended to attract a diverse and international body of lecturers and students, support research and teaching on global topics, and establish academic relationships with many countries and regions. It expects all areas of the university to advance knowledge and learning at the highest level and to carry the results of their efforts into the world.

Jody Kraus
Jurist and philosopher Jody Kraus focuses his research on the relationship between moral and economic legal theories in general, with a particular focus on contract law. He is co-author (with Columbia Professor Robert E. Scott) of a leading case book, Contract Law and Theory (fifth edition). Kraus and Scott also recently co-authored The Case Against Equity in American Contract Law (93 Southern California Law Review 1323 (2020)). As an expert on contracts and the Uniform Commercial Code, Kraus has testified in both US and foreign disputes and regularly advises lawyers around the world on these issues. When Kraus joined the Law School faculty in 2012, he was appointed Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University. He teaches introductory and advanced contract courses and has taught courses on contract law philosophy, legal theory, political philosophy, and legal philosophy. He is on the faculty of the new Columbia Law School Executive LL.M. in the Global Business Law course. Kraus was division organizer for the Contracts and Commercial Law section of the American Law and Economics Association. He is a member of the American Law Institute, Advisory Board of Legal Theory, Association of American Law Schools, American Philosophical Association, and the New York and Virginia Bar Associations.
