Apply to be a GS Resident Advisor

Resident Advisors (RAs) are members of the GS Housing and GS Student Life teams primarily responsible for community development, mediation, programming, policy communication and crisis intervention, and with university offices like GS Housing, the GS Dean of Students. collaborate office, Columbia residential buildings, health services and public safety. RAs report directly to GS Student Life and work with the GS Housing Committee staff.

Note: Students who can be RA for two years in a row will be given priority in the search; Returning RAs are given priority for the RA position.

Participation requirements

  • The RA position is ten month long and applicants must be present from August 1, 2021 to May 31, 2022
  • The position is open to both Bachelor and Postbac Premed students at the School of General Studies
  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled full-time (12 or more points); Postbac Premed students must be enrolled full-time (9 points and fulfillment of the voluntary obligation of the program)
  • A cumulative and semester grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 is required
  • RAs must have good academic and disciplinary status

Note: All admission requirements are required for application and must be maintained throughout the position.

Thursday, March 25th, 4 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Students interested in the next academic year as Resident Advisor (RA) are invited to attend a briefing hosted by GS Housing and the GS Resident Advisors to learn more about the RA's role and the RA application process and schedule . Participants can ask questions and meet current members of the RA team.

Position responsibility

Community development

  • Continuously assess residents' needs and report information to GS Housing and GS Student Life
  • Organize two events per month that aim to create a community among residents
  • Weekly evening consultation for residents
  • Gathering research through active collaboration with GS residents to identify community needs

Mediation and support

  • Mediate conflicts between roommates, roommates, and neighbors when necessary and appropriate
  • Offer support to the residents
  • Promote a healthy study environment and positive living space for residents
  • Coordinate with GS Housing and Columbia Residential staff to make recommendations
  • Adhere to the established standards of confidentiality
  • If necessary, provide references to campus resources for residents (i.e. GS Dean's Office, Counseling and Psychological Service, Office of Disability Services, Public Safety, etc.)

Information, communication and resource recommendation

  • Reach out immediately to any incident that threatens the health, safety and security of the community and contact the appropriate person to clarify the situation
  • Reply to emails related to the RA position and GS housing within 24 hours

Administrative responsibilities and duties

  • Attend weekly managerial meetings, regular Columbia Residential meetings, and other meetings as needed
  • Document all concerns and concerns with the residents in a timely manner via Maxient - the university's official reporting system
  • Familiarize yourself with all of GS Housing's policies and communicate them in a positive way
  • Refer disciplinary matters to the responsible manager in good time
  • Take summer training for the RA position
  • Problem solving with GS Housing and Columbia Residential employees

expectations

  • Must place the responsibilities of the RA position before all part-time jobs and extracurricular activities
  • Must maintain confidentiality as RAs work with residents in crises and sensitive situations
  • Resident Advisors live in an assigned location determined by GS Housing and GS Student Life

Expenditure of time

  • Must be present and available during the entire ten-month engagement (August 1, 2021 - May 31, 2022)
  • Must be available to be available as an orientation guide during orientation in autumn 2021 and spring 2022
  • RAs have holiday season for Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Breaks
  • RAs must attend all training and weekly meetings, be committed to the overall position, and be available during scheduled evening shifts

compensation

RAs receive full rent within one of the GS Housing dormitories in single family homes (unfortunately couples and family apartments cannot be accommodated for the RA position). RAs are assigned to a unit by GS Housing. The unit type will be a shared suite with other GS residents - the RA has its own bedroom but a shared bathroom, kitchen and common rooms.

Interview
