The scope of the Encyclopedia Iranica includes the multidisciplinary study of all peoples who speak Iranian languages, wherever they have lived, at all times; the mutual relations of the Iranians and their neighbors, especially the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, the Caucasus and Central Asia; and the influence of Iranian civilization in a global context. She is particularly concerned with topics such as Shiite studies, Iranian ethnography and folklore, the history of science, calligraphy, music and art, as well as entries on important books. As a scientific reference work, it should cover all aspects of Iranian history and culture as well as all Iranian languages and literatures and enable the entire spectrum of Iranian research from archeology to the social and natural sciences. However, the biographies of living persons are excluded. Entries written by the best available authority are peer-reviewed and signed by experts, contain textual documentation and offer bibliographies appropriate to the topic.
